Delain fue fundado por Martijn Westerholt, el ex-teclista y hermano de uno de los fundadores de Within Temptation, Robert Westerholt. Abandonó Within Temptation en el 2001 cuando enfermó de mononucleosis infecciosa y empezó con Delain en el 2002.
Sin embargo, sólo hasta 2005 Martijn conoció a la vocalista soprano Charlotte Wessels. Ese mismo año, después de haber firmado un contrato con la discográfica Roadrunner Records, comenzaron a grabar su primer disco.
Para su primer álbum "Lucidity" invitaron a varios músicos famosos: Jan Yrlund de Lacrimosa, Ad Sluijter de Epica, Ariën van Weesenbeek de God Dethroned, Sharon Den Adel de Within Temptation, Liv Kristine de Leaves' Eyes, Marco Hietala de Nightwish, George Oosterhoek y Guus Eikens, ambos miembros de Orphanage antes de su disolución.
